The Show Must, Did And Will Go On
Kenny Chesney is recovering from a "crushed" foot injury that he endured during "Live Those Songs Again," his stadium show opener in South Carolina on Saturday night. Kenny's boot was lodged between the lift and the stage for nearly 40 seconds as the lift motor kept trying to push the platform up. Ever the athlete, Chesney leaned over, exhaled hard and kept going through a blazing set that had the crowd of over 44 thousand on their feet, singing, clapping and cheering all night. While the University of South Carolina's team doctor waited on the side of the stage, Kenny delivered a full-tilt two-hour set. He recalls, "I took one look at those fans, and there was no way I wasn't going on. Sometimes the energy and the adrenaline pull you through. They had come to rock, and there was no way I was sending them home with anything less than the best of what me and my guys came to do - put it all out there and give them back at least as good as they gave us… And honestly, through the pain, through all of it, Columbia, South Carolina totally got me through."
At one point in the show Cheney told the crowd, "I saw you in the parking lots today getting ready for us, and this is nothing a broken foot is going to stop." During the show, he hobbled across the expansive stage on only the heel of his right boot and, occasionally, hopped around on his left foot alone. At one point the superstar even climbed on Uncle Kracker's back and was carried to the furthest reaches of the double-T shaped stage to the great delight of the crowd, who never really seemed to grasp just how hurt he was. When the show was over, Kenny's boot had to be cut off and the doctor gave him two shots of morphine for the pain.
After a series of tests with his own orthopedist in Nashville, it has been determined that Chesney basically suffered a hematoma from the ankle down. There are no broken bones, but he suffered severe bruising and tissue damage. The doctor says Chesney will be able to maintain his commitments. A relieved Kenny shares, "Dr. Elrod got that the last thing I want to do is cancel shows, but also that I don't want any kind of lasting damage… because being able to hit that stage and really rock the fans is important to me. He told me it's going to hurt, though nothing could hurt worse than Saturday I don't think, and they can give me something to deaden the pain when I get out there. I also have to have a doctor standing by should something give, but I'm going to tape it up and I'm going to get out there."
